Brownfields

The Site Assessment and Remediation branch protects public health and the environment by overseeing the assessment and cleanup of contaminated properties. Environmental liability and public health concerns often prevent the redevelopment, expansion or reuse of properties that may be contaminated by hazardous substances or pollutants. Sites that have been abandoned or underutilized due to the presence of real or perceived contamination are often known as "Brownfields." USEPA supports a variety of initiatives to redevelop Brownfields into socially, economically, and environmentally viable properties.
